National Seminar on Agricultural Cooperatives: The key to Feeding the world on 16th November 2012 at the college auditorium in commemoration of 32nd Foundation Day of the college of Cooperation, Banking and Management, Kerala Agricultural University, Vellanikkara, Thrissur

The seminar was inaugurated by Sri. M.P.Vincent, M.L.A, Ollur and Executive Committee Member, KAU. He emphasized the need for depoliticizing the co-operatives and expanding its wings to all spheres of life. According to him, Co-operatives’ must be managed by its patrons and not vested interests.

The function was presided over by Dr.P.Rajendran, Vice-Chancellor of KAU. The Vice- Chancellor called upon Co-operatives to diversify their operations into primary production, procurement, processing and marketing of agricultural commodities. He also pointed out that sustained growth of agriculture can be achieved only by ensuring fair price to the farmers by creation of price stabilization fund and value addition.

There were three technical sessions. In the first technical session at 12.15 PM, which was presided over by Prof. Philip Sabu, Sri.M.M Monaye ,Ex.M.L.A, Presented the paper on ‘ Reforms in Banking Regulations-Impact on Co-operative Banking in Kerala.

In the second technical session, Dr.T.Paranjothi, Professor, VAMNICOM, Pune, presented the paper on ‘Agricultural Co-operatives and Indian Economy.’. Dr.A.M . Jose chaired the session.

In the last session, Sri. P.N. Mohanan, leading advocate of Kerala High court presented the paper on ‘Co-operative law for Co-operative business; Impact on constitutional amendment’. Dr. E.Vinaikumar presided over the session.

College of Co-operation, Banking and Management was established on 16th November 2011 in order to institutionalise and lead teaching, research and extension activities pertaining to the structure, systems, strategies and performance of the Co-operative Sector, Banking Sector, Commodity Markets, Commodity Development Boards, Agro-Food Processing Industries, Rural Development Organisations and Agri-input Service Providers which drive the competitiveness and sustained growth of the agricultural sector.
  During the past 30 years of journey, the institution has risen to national eminence by executing several innovative educational, research and training programmes in the areas of Co-operation, Banking, Agribusiness, Rural Development and Local Development.  
  In recognition of the high standards the institution maintains in teaching, research and extension programmes and the high quality of the teaching faculty and the service delivery system, the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) has accorded Accreditation to the College in 2004.  
  The college has four statutory departments viz., Co-operative Management, Marketing Management, Development Economics and Banking and Finance Management and 18 teaching faculty in position.  
  The college offers one UG (Degree) course (B.Sc. Hons. C&B), three PG courses (M.Sc. C&B) and an MBA with specialisation in Agribusiness Management, the only MBA of its in Kerala. The college is also authorised to offer Ph.D. programmes and has already produced two Ph.Ds in Rural Marketing Management.  
  The institution has a student strength of 240 including both UG and PG. Even students from other states (including ICAR nominees) are seeking admission for our UG, PG and MBA courses. Students from Kenya, Malawi, Erethrea and Afghanistan are pursuing our MBA (Agribusiness Management) course.  
  The graduates and post-graduates passing out from our college are highly esteemed and sought after by employers particularly from Banking, Financial Services, Agribusiness, Rural Development and FMCG sectors. We are proud to state that our graduates hold key positions in several leading establishments (Banking, Manufacturing, Education and Research) in India and abroad.  
   Future Development Plans  
  The proposal for converting the college into a full fledged faculty called Faculty of Agribusiness Management in the 12th Plan has been put up to the University and the State Planning Board for favourable consideration.  
  The creation of a new Faculty in Agribusiness Management will lay a strong scientific foundation (human capital, financial capital and social infrastructure) for undertaking management education, research and training programmes required by the fast emerging agro-food processing industry, food retail chains, agri-value chains and the rural banking sector. Moreover, it will open up large number of attractive job and entrepreneurship opportunities for the educated youth of Kerala.  
  Under the Faculty of Agribusiness Management, a new college exclusively for Agribusiness Management Education, a slew of innovative educational programmes and seven Centres of Excellence are proposed for implementation.  
  In the 12th Plan the new Faculty will be giving top priority to Agri-entrepreneurship and Innovation, Commodity Markets and Market Intelligence, Rural Management and Social Business Management.  
   Foundation Day Celebrations  
  The 31st Foundation Day of the College will be celebrated on 16th and 17th November 2011 by organising two National Seminars, a Family Meet and a Cultural Gala at the KAU Central Auditorium, Vellanikkara.  
   National Seminar on Agribusiness Management  
  The National Seminar on the theme 'Agribusiness Management for Inclusive Growth' will be inaugurated by Sri. M.P. Vincent, the Hon'ble MLA and Member, Executive Committee of KAU on Wednesday, 16th November 2011 at 9.30 am at the KAU Central Auditorium, Vellanikkara.  
  Sri. C.P. John, the Hon'ble member of Kerala State Planning Board will deliver the key-note address on the theme 'Sustainable Agricultural Development of Kerala – Road Ahead'. The inaugural function will be chaired by Dr. K.R. Viswambharan, the Hon'ble Vice-Chancellor of KAU.  
  In the first technical session scheduled at 2 pm, Dr. Sthanu R. Nair, Professor, IIM, Kozhikode will present the theme paper on 'Agricultural Value Chain Management for Sustainable Growth of Kerala Agro-economy'.  
  In the final session (3.15 pm) the theme paper on 'Agri-entrepreneurship Opportunities in Kerala' will be presented by Sri. T.K. Jose, IAS, Chairman, Coconut Development Board, Kochi.  
   National Seminar on Co-operative Enterprises  
  The National Seminar on "Co-operative Enterprises to Build a Better World" will be inaugurated by Adv. Therambil Ramakrishnan, MLA, the Hon'ble former Speaker of Kerala Legislative Assembly on Thursday, 17th November 2011 at 10 am.  
  Sri. P.T. Gopala Kurup, the Hon'ble Chairman of MILMA will deliver the key-note address and Dr. K.R. Viswambharan, the Hon'ble Vice-Chancellor of KAU will preside over the function.  
  In the ensuing technical sessions, Dr.K. Prathapan, Managing Director, KERAFED, Thiruvananthapuram will present the theme paper on 'Agribusiness Co-operatives and Kerala Economy' at 12 noon, Dr. T. Paranjothi, Professor, VAMNICOM, Pune will present the theme paper on 'Human Resource Development in Co-operatives' at 2 pm and Dr. M. Ramanunni, General Manager, Thrissur District Co-operative Bank Ltd., will present the theme paper on 'Re-engineering of Co-operative Enterprises' at 3.15 pm.
